This week, the UK government has unveiled the new SEG (Smart Export Guarantee), brought in to replace the Feed-in Tariff (FiT).
The solar industry has long anticipated a new scheme as FiT came to the end of it’s 9-year run on March 31st 2019. With the clock ticking, many were worried that a replacement wouldn’t be implemented in time.
Whilst they have declared that there will be a brief hiatus period until it comes into effect, the good news is the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has stated that payments from the new guarantee will be backdated and be applicable to any PV systems installed from April 1st 2019.
With the new SEG in place, there is one more detail you need to be aware of.
The introduction of SEG has since prompted discussion about MCS certification and its importance in the renewable industry.
BEIS has proposed that systems with capacities up to and including 50kW will require MCS certified equipment, installed only by MCS registered installers in order to qualify for the new scheme.
Meaning, PV Systems need to be MCS Certified to qualify for the SEG payments.
Many in the renewable sector and ourselves included are seeing it as a consistent move towards safer installations by registered and reputable companies.
Those that do not meet the criteria will not be able to claim payments. This move could eradicate more “cowboy traders” from damaging the industry.
What is MCS certification?
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is a body that certifies renewable products and technologies as well as providing accreditation for installers.
It was founded to help enable the renewables market to thrive, in a safe and regulated fashion, ensuring the highest quality of products and installation.
How is it implemented?
In order to qualify for MCS certification, renewable product manufacturers have to go through rigorous testing to assess if they meet MCS product standards. For installers, who wish to register are assessed by a certification body to make sure they are in line with MCS guidelines. These steps ensure that installations are at the peak of safety and quality.
MCS certification has always been an important scheme, aiming to regulate and advise both producers and installers on safety, but it is now at the forefront of the new Smart Export Guarantee, continuing to ensure quality products are installed by qualified professionals.
